Cross-breed Blend Light DK

£21.00£24.00

Cross-breed Blend combines fleeces from several cross-bred ewes (Bluefaced Leicester and Cheviot, Lincoln and Cheviot, and Lincoln and Hampshire).  All were beautiful in their own right and, in combination, give a characterful soft but bouncy and slightly lustrous, drapey wool.  It is a natural soft grey shade and, when naturally dyed, gives a lovely deep heathered tone to the dyed shades.

Cross-breed Blend is a light DK at 245m/100g. I’m planning to knit the Hedgewitch Shawl, as part of Nicole and Sarah’s KAL -with three skeins undyed and two skeins of dyed Cross Breeds.  I can’t wait to cast on on 22 December!

For 2018 we have repeated our popular Cross-breed Blend with a real mix of breeds from several cross-breed ewes – Bluefaced Leicester and Cheviot, Lincoln and Cheviot, and Lincoln and Hampshire. The fleeces were all lovely and have blended well together – the resulting yarn picks up slight drape and sheen from the longwool ancestry, softness from the Hampshire genes and a light bounce and lightness from the Cheviot influence. It is a light DK weight and is lovely to knit with. The 2018 version of Cross Breed Blend has a beautiful natural grey shade but is otherwise similar to the 2018 version.

Two skeins will knit a slightly larger version of the stunning Coastal Walk Shawl by Joji Locatelli (see product images for examples).

It has been expertly spun by The Border Mill and the wool comes from Orrinside Flock.

  1. Black Isle Yarns are gently and minimally processed by The Border Mill from real animals who enjoy an outdoor life (in beautiful surroundings, lucky beasts!) – consequently you may find the odd bit of vegetation in your yarn, these are easy to remove as you knit and, if you’re lucky enough to find some, I hope will remind you of the special animals who have grown your yarn!
  2. I do my best to show the yarn colours as accurately as possible but please be aware that colours do vary from monitor to monitor
  3. Your yarn should be gently hand washed in cool water using pH neutral wool wash such as Eucalan or Soak. This may seem time consuming at first but should soon become an enjoyable part of working with a gently treated natural product.
  4. All my dyed colours have been thoroughly washed and rinsed however there may be a slight release of residual colour on washing – this shouldn’t change the overall yarn colour or alter other colours.
