Zwartbles Cheviot Blend DK

Our Zwartbles Cheviot Blend (50:50%) is a lovely strong yet soft yarn which is perfect for heritage jumpers and cosy mittens. The fabric is hardwearing and will last for many years. The Zwartbles lends a plumpness and crispness while the Cheviot brings it’s dense, bouncy and warm characteristics. The 2017 blend has a particularly smooth spin and a deep slightly heathered grey colour.

Our Zwartbles comes from ‘Hedgefield Zwartbles’ which is the show name for Jim and Linda’s award winning flock.  Their sheep are a very handsome bunch!  The flock is based on the edge of the small town of Beauly – set at the head of the Beauly Firth (just a few miles inland from the Black Isle).  Jim clips his best youngsters early ready for the coming show season which means we are able to benefit from their ‘shearling’ fleeces.  The wool has a softer handle than that of mature Zwartbles and the fleece is a beautiful rich bitter chocolate brown with less of the bleaching that comes in with age. The Bluefaced Leicester used in this blend is British (we are working on sourcing additional local BFL for future years).

Our Cheviot comes from the very eclectic ‘Orrinside Flock’.  Jane’s land is on the edge of the Black Isle, not far from Beauly, and has beautiful views inland to Glen Affric and Cannich – a very lovely area with hill after hill on the horizon.  The core flock consists of North Country Cheviots which are the main sheep around here. They’re not generally thought to have particularly exciting wool and it is often written off as being fit for carpets only. This is most definitely not the case with the fleeces from this flock!

This yarn has been beautifully spun by The Border Mill in the Scottish Borders.

Metres per 100g:

  1. Black Isle Yarns are gently and minimally processed by The Border Mill from real animals who enjoy an outdoor life (in beautiful surroundings, lucky beasts!) – consequently you may find the odd bit of vegetation in your yarn, these are easy to remove as you knit and, if you’re lucky enough to find some, I hope will remind you of the special animals who have grown your yarn!
  2. I do my best to show the yarn colours as accurately as possible but please be aware that colours do vary from monitor to monitor
  3. Your yarn should be gently hand washed in cool water using pH neutral wool wash such as Eucalan or Soak. This may seem time consuming at first but should soon become an enjoyable part of working with a gently treated natural product.
