Coulmore Bruno is a very limited edition one off yarn.  A blend of Valais Blacknose x Cheviot Hogg fleece with Birtish Alpaca, it has been spun as a 2ply soft spun DK-Light Aran weight. It has a soft handle, with a very slight tooth, and is airy and light to the touch.

The Coulmore flock are part of an organic flock on a family run farm with land here on the Black Isle and also on the west coast near Ullapool.  Their land supports Maddie and her husband Neil, plus their daughters and families – Iona at Rhidorroch on the west and Bella at Coulmore here on the east.  They have farmed organically for many years (wth their barley going into Bruichladdich’s ‘The Organic’ whisky!) but sadly the fleece from their Cheviots fetches even less from the than normal, not organic, Cheviot fleece.  Even allowing that the family do the clipping themselves they get very little return for their flock’s fleece.

Bella had (unfortunately he has died since) a favourite tup, Bruno, who was a Valais Blacknose.  As much out of curiosity as anything else I bought a few of the fleeces from his daughters – Cheviot x Valais hogg (first clip).  Valais is quite a strong fibre and has a long staple and I was surprised by the good handle of the Cheviot cross hogg fleeces.  In combination with 50% Alpaca, and a beautiful 2ply soft spin by The Border Mill, Coulmore Bruno is a really special yarn one-off limited edition yarn.

  1. Black Isle Yarns Coulmore Bruno is processed by The Border Mill.  The wool comes from real animals who enjoy an outdoor life (in beautiful surroundings, lucky beasts!) – consequently you may find the odd bit of vegetation in your yarn, these are easy to remove as you knit and, if you’re lucky enough to find some, I hope will remind you of the special animals who have grown your yarn!
  2. I do my best to show the yarn colours as accurately as possible but please be aware that colours do vary from monitor to monitor.
  3. Your yarn should be gently hand washed in cool water using pH neutral wool wash such as Eucalan or Soak. This may seem time consuming at first but should soon become an enjoyable part of working with a gently treated natural product.
  4. All my dyed colours have been thoroughly washed and rinsed however there may be a slight release of residual colour on washing – this shouldn’t change the overall yarn colour or alter other colours.
