Coulmore Mini Skein Sets (ideal for Rhidorroch Hat)

£26.50

The fleeces in Coulmore are first clip from a flock of organic Cheviots, on the shore of North Kessock here on the Black Isle, and have been organically worsted spun by The Natural Fibre Co.

Each mini skein set includes 4 x 30g mini skeins with approximately 120g in each set. The sets include enough yarn to knit all sizes of Emily Williams new hat pattern, Rhidorroch,  designed specially for these sets – however they would also work well for many other projects………..hats, mitts, cowls, baby knits or colour-work in a larger project.

Sold in 120g Skeins

The natural dyes used in these mini skein sets are as follows: ‘Naturals’  – nettle, tea, and bramble leaves, plus undyed, ‘Blues’ – indigo and annatto, indigo and heather, and indigo, plus undyed, and ‘Cheery’ – avocado, indigo, and rhubarb and quebracho, plus undyed.  Coulmore DK is a lovely strong wool but with a soft smooth handle and very good stitch definition.

The Coulmore flock are part of an organic flock on a family run farm with land here on the Black Isle and also on the west coast near Ullapool.  Their land supports Maddie and her husband Neil, plus their daughters and families – Iona at Rhidorroch on the west and Bella at Coulmore here on the east.  They have farmed organically for many years (wth their barley going into Bruichladdich’s ‘The Organic’ whisky!) but sadly the fleece from their Cheviots fetches even less from the than normal, not organic, Cheviot fleece.  Even allowing that the family do the clipping themselves, mostly Maddie in fact, they get very little return for their flock’s fleece.

The family were keen for me to try having some of their fleece spun, not just because I would pay them a good rate for the wool, but because they really want to see all products from their land being well-used and, if possible, with added value.  I bought some of their hogg clip in summer 2017– a ‘hogg’ being a ewe lamb which is being kept on the farm to be bred from the following year.  I wanted to keep the organic status of the wool and consequently had it spun at The Natural Fibre Company in Cornwall.

  1. Black Isle Yarns Coulmore is processed by The Natural Fibre Company.  The wool comes from real animals who enjoy an outdoor life (in beautiful surroundings, lucky beasts!) – consequently you may find the odd bit of vegetation in your yarn, these are easy to remove as you knit and, if you’re lucky enough to find some, I hope will remind you of the special animals who have grown your yarn!
  2. I do my best to show the yarn colours as accurately as possible but please be aware that colours do vary from monitor to monitor.
  3. Your yarn should be gently hand washed in cool water using pH neutral wool wash such as Eucalan or Soak. This may seem time consuming at first but should soon become an enjoyable part of working with a gently treated natural product.
  4. All my dyed colours have been thoroughly washed and rinsed however there may be a slight release of residual colour on washing – this shouldn’t change the overall yarn colour or alter other colours.
