Longwool Blend is a glorious longwool yarn spun with local Wensleydale fleeces – and is drapey, lustrous, strong and smooth.  The yarn is approximately 4 ply/Fingering and has been expertly spun by The Border Mill. It is worth bearing in mind that because it is quite a dense fibre, and also because of the way The Border Mill is set-up to spin, the yarn itself is quite fine (in terms of diameter) compared to others with the same m/100g.

The wool comes from Culgowrie Flock.  Jane has a very eclectic mix of sheep breeds and is great to work with, taking a real interest in the yarn produced from her fleece. In 2019, for the first time, Jane decided to enter some of her fleece in the Royal Highland Show, Scotland’s biggest agricultural show……….and she came away with 1st and 2nd prize in the Lustre class! The yarn varies a little year to year depending which are the best fleeces and in 2020 I selected all Wensleydale wool.

Longwool Blend is perfect for drapey shawls or sweater designs such as Ranunculus or Love Note. I think Ranunculus is only available as a pattern from Ravelry but this link takes you to some images for this lovely and popular sweater.  I am happy to help with accessing the pattern if needed. Love Note is a design that I have knit for myself and would thoroughly recommend (though I did knit the neckband a little differently). Another design I would recommend is the Lode Shawl by Clare Devine – I knit this with what I think was the first ever batch of Longwool Blend and still really enjoy my neat little shawl (which only takes one skein). Again this is only available on Ravelry so please just ask if you need help.

  1. Black Isle Yarns are gently and minimally processed by The Border Mill from real animals who enjoy an outdoor life (in beautiful surroundings, lucky beasts!) – consequently you may find the odd bit of vegetation in your yarn, these are easy to remove as you knit and, if you’re lucky enough to find some, I hope will remind you of the special animals who have grown your yarn!
  2. I do my best to show the yarn colours as accurately as possible but please be aware that colours do vary from monitor to monitor
  3. Your yarn should be gently hand washed in cool water using pH neutral wool wash such as Eucalan or Soak. This may seem time consuming at first but should soon become an enjoyable part of working with a gently treated natural product.
  4. All my dyed colours have been thoroughly washed and rinsed however there may be a slight release of residual colour on washing – this shouldn’t change the overall yarn colour or alter other colours.
