The 50% Gotlandish wool in this yarn comes from Fearniewell Croft. Fearniewell’s flock started with Gotland ewes with which they have used Shetland and Charollais tups. Over the years they have kept the best lambs for their flock so that the ewes now have a mix of Gotland, Shetland and Charollais genes. Rather than detracting from the Gotland fleece the additional genes really add to the characteristics of the flock’s fleeces. Gotland is lustrous, drapey and smooth (with the most beautiful crimp) – the Shetland adds some softness and the Charollais (despite being primarily a meat breed) has Bluefaced Leicester in its ancestry and has a fine elastic quality.
Not all the ewes have the characteristic grey fleece of a pure-bred Gotland, and so the wool is expertly blended with naturally black, grey and white alpaca by The Border Mill .
The yarn is 50% Gotlandish and 50% British Alpaca in four natural undyed shades (Charcoal, Grey, Silver and Cream). At 225m/100g it has a lot of drape, some lustre, a slight comforting toothiness and is next-to-skin comfortable for most people.
The mini skein sets are perfect for a fun, quick project and also make a lovely gift (especially with a pattern copy too).
Each set will knit the Shivelight Cowl, Rhidorroch Hat, or Resolis Mittens.…..or other colourwork and striped hat, cowl or mitt patterns. They also work ideally for colourwork in larger projects.
